The first permanent Mobile Bar Pilot was appointed by the King of France in 1711. Ever since, pilots have navigated ships over the Mobile (sand) Bar, Mobile Bay, ever since. A community of Bar Pilots formed in an area near Navy Cove known as Pilot Town. Surnames such as Dorgan, Causott, Dunmore, St. John, Norville and Wallace, to name a few, have descendants still living in Baldwin County. Our April presenter, Jeanette Bornholt, a descendant of the Dorgan family bar pilots, will show a side of this history of which many are unaware. Jeanette is a Baldwin County native; her ancestors settled here in the early 1800s. She is assistant Librarian with Cultural &Heritage Collections of the Foley Public Library.
