In 1848, Franz Liszt left the stage and settled in Weimar, where he reshaped orchestral music by inventing the symphonic poem. Years later, he returned to the form for one final, moving work: From the Cradle to the Grave, inspired by a drawing depicting life, struggle, and death. It opens this evocative concert.
Next, we journey through Songs of Travel by Vaughan Williams – a powerful song cycle often called the “English Winterreise,” based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s poetry. Baritone James Atkinson brings its highs and lows to life in the orchestral version, from hope to heartbreak.
We close with Franck’s Symphony in D minor – his only symphony and a cornerstone of the French repertoire. Though critics at its 1888 premiere were unsure, it has become a beloved work, honoured by composers and audiences alike. Conducted by Jac van Steen, this is a performance not to miss.
