Entry by gold coin donation to the Cancer Society. After the concert there will be a light afternoon tea.
Our free afternoon community concert will feature the combined ‘forces’ of Cambridge Brass Band and Cambridge Little Big Band with music arranged especially by musical director Rob Hocking. It is in honour of the New Zealanders including several pilots from Cambridge who fought.
The Battle of Britain was fought 85 years ago between July and October 1940 between the German Luftwaffe and the British Royal Air Force. It was seen by Hitler as a prelude to the invasion of Britain. Victory in this battle would lay the ground for the future outcome of World War II. Around 1700 German Luftwaffe planes were destroyed.
After Britain and Poland, our 135 kiwis made up the third greatest number to take part in the battle, highlighting our important contribution to the war effort.
Several pilots from Cambridge, New Zealand, including Alan Deere, Wilfrid Clouston, and Keith Park, played significant roles in the Royal Air Force, with Keith Park commanding a crucial fighter group.
