Did you know that New Mexico is home to one of the most diverse populations of bat species in North America? Local bat biologist, Milu Velardi will talk about our resident bats and our lesser-known migratory species, as well as pollinator species found in the southern part of the state. She will also discuss how scientists go about studying them and the status of their populations as they face the ever-growing threat of White Nose Syndrome in our state.About the presenter:
Milu Velardi works within LANL’s biological resources team. In her current position, she assists in threatened and endangered species compliance as well as migratory bird work and most recently she has led the charge in gaining a better understanding of species presence at the lab through the use of acoustic recording units or ARU’s. She earned a graduate degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Resources late in life, studying her first true love – bats - in the hardwood forests of West Virginia. While not at the lab, Milu enjoys caving, trail running, movie watching, and general eating. She is always looking up in the sky, hoping to identify every bird that flits past or staring at the ground following mammal tracks in the mud. This can make hiking with her a challenge. But it is indeed one of the many highlights of her job here in Los Alamos.
