HISTORY - THE SITE OF THE TRIATHLON IS VERY HISTORIC.
This is where Governor and Lady Macquarie stopped after travelling the newly built cox road to proclaim the first site for European Settlement in Inland Australia (West of the Great Divide). Prior to that, the location was the meeting place of the two dominate water courses of the Bathurst Plains. The Wambool (Macquarie River) and Vale creek joining at the triathlon’s location and creating a sand banked water hole. The development of the city of Bathurst resulted in the rerouting of the Vale stream to a different junction up stream.
Our Australian Day Triathlon race starting point is adjacent to the Wambuul Ceremonial Ground & 2015 Bicentennial meeting site from the city’s 200-year celebrations. Race organisers asking all to consider the history of the site - Not only the significance of the site to modern inland Australia but also that former natural water hole and the sites first inhabitants who preserved the natural beauty of this spot for thousands of years.
