About this Event
We are thrilled to welcome Bataa Jambaldorj to Maureen's on Saturday 5th October for an up-close and personal afternoon performance. Recently, Bataa opened for Poor Creature in Dublin to an entranced audience in his first ever Irish performance.
Although Bataa was born and raised in Mongolia's capital city Ulan Bataar, he spent part of his childhood with his grandfather in the countryside, far from UB's urban sprawl. Bataa's grandfather lived a nomadic life in a traditional Mongolia Ger (known as a yurt in the west). Around the fire In the evenings, a neighbour would entertain the community by singing and playing his horse head fiddle. Bataa became fascinated by the range of haunting and melodious tones that can be produced with just this simple instrument and the power of the human voice.
As a teenager, Bataa took music lessons and trained in the centuries old technique of throat singing, he showed exceptional talent and now many believe he has become a master of this skill
As can easily happen, the obligations of life got in the way, and Bataa qualified and began working as an Electrical Engineer. But the lure of music was too strong and he quit his job to focus on performing full time. He has played theatres, venues and festivals throughout Mongolia and now his plan is to take the ethereal sound of the Mongolia steppe round the world, in the hope of entrancing audiences, just as he was at his grandfather's fireside.
Performance begins at 3 p.m., doors at 2.45.
