A 2 day workshop focussing on some of the key knowledge and skills required for the Level 1 and/or Level 2 Bat Survey Licence (England)
About this Event

Are you just starting out working with bats? Are you working towards either your Level 1 (CL17) or Level 2 (CL18) licence? This 2-day knowledge and experience building workshop may be for you! Starting with a theory session, we will introduce/re-cap the relevant legislation, biology/ecology and survey techniques covered by the CL17 & CL18 licences, and the practicalities around obtaining a licence and keeping a suitable logbook.

We will then visit several local sites, using the current best practice guidelines to assess for roost potential in trees and building of several types, and identify any signs of bats. There will be an opportunity to gain practical experience in endoscoping under supervision. We will visit two sites (including one ancient woodland) where we will have the opportunity to conduct bat box checks. If we are lucky enough to find any roosting bats, there will be an opportunity to gain handling experience and contribute to the ongoing monitoring project locally by taking biometric measurements. There will also be a dusk transect survey in a local woodland where a dozen species have been recorded.

For those working towards a licence, your trainer will be able to sign your log book to endose any activity that may count towards your hours.

*Please note that if the weather is not suitable, it may be necessary to re-arrange practical parts of the workshop. As with all courses involving the study of animals in the wild, we cannot guarantee we will encounter bats, and cannot therefore guarantee any handling experience. The workshop fee is for 2 days training, excluding meals and accommodation. We are happy to recommend suitable local places to stay.
