After a phenomenal success in 2016, Bassem Youssef returns with a brand new show in English!
The media have compared him to Jon Stewart because of his TV show El Bernameg, which drew more than 30 million viewers per episode, becoming the number one show in the entire history of the Arab world. Time magazine named him among the world’s 100 most influential people in 2013. Since the popular uprisings in Egypt, he has been the absolute icon of freedom of expression.
A heart surgeon by training but a humourist at heart, Bassem Youssef embarked on a truly bold venture by launching his political satire show El Bernameg (“The Program”) in 2011 just after former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was driven from power, achieving phenomenal audience ratings. The bane of the Muslim Brotherhood for his vitriolic criticisms of President Mohamed Morsi and later of the regime and army, he was prosecuted and threatened with death, forcing him to halt his show.
Bassem Youssef has been interviewed by Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah as well as by some of the world’s top media. His most recent projects include “Democracy Handbook” a ten-part series on fusion.tv exploring topics of democracy, and the launch of a new book, Revolution for Dummies: Laughing Through the Arab Spring.
Bassem Youssef promises us a hilarious evening blending sharp criticism, biting irony and brazen sarcasm. Everything and everyone goes under the surgeon-humourist’s scalpel: on the menu, Arab and international politics, the media and their conspiracy theories, religious obscurantism, plus a broad array of controversies drawn from socio-political events.
