Theresa Martin of Fig Hill Farm will be talking about how you can use invasive (and non-invasive) plants from your garden and surrounding community to make functional and beautiful baskets. She will have samples and various kinds of baskets made from various kinds of materials, and bring a variety of materials for you to play with. Some materials to try may include: bindweed, yucca leaves, iris leaves, willow bark, mimosa bark, honeysuckle, milkweed, and dogbane, which you will use to try out plaiting and twining, two of the three major basketmaking techniques.Theresa Martin is a retired high school English teacher who has been making prints for about a decade, and baskets for a couple years. She grows basketry willows on her farm, but really enjoys gathering wild plant materials, and using shoots, leaves, vines, and roots that she can gather on her farm to make baskets.
