THE ANVILRossini: The Thieving Magpie Overture
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4
Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 3 (Scottish Symphony)
Performers and Cast
Thomas Luke: piano
Stephen Scotchmer
Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie Overture is typical of the composer’s style, featuring a stirring opening drum roll, exciting crescendos and a rousing finish – an ideal opening to any concert.
Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto is not so typical of Beethoven’s pianistic writing, requiring much more savoir faire, subtlety, discipline, control, finesse, and exquisite legato playing than is evident in the crashing keyboard attacks required in his other concertos.
BBC Young Musician Keyboard Winner and holder of the 2025 Prix Monti from the Piano Campus International Piano Competition, Thomas Luke, has these qualities in abundance. This outstanding talent is sure to bring his technical perfection and remarkable musicality to the performance.
Inspired by Mendelssohn’s visit to Scotland in 1829, the Scottish Symphony, whilst not strictly programmatic, successfully capture the spirit and imagery of the landscape and history.
