About this Event
Overview
This class covers the fundamentals of wood turning:
- Parts and functions of a wood lathe
- Setting up the lathe for spindle turning
- Turning speeds
- Wood turning tools - gouges, chisels, scrapers, and specialty tools
- Safety
- Basic techniques - coves, beads, flats, fillets, ogees, etc.
Centered on spindle turning, or “turning between centers”, each class member will have a chance to mount stock in the lathe, rough out a cylinder, and cut basic shapes.
There are no material costs for this class - we will be turning wood scraps, and not really making any finished products.
Please meet in the wood shop area by class start time.
The class is limited to 6 total students to allow hands-on time for everyone.
Important Notes- Wear a short sleeve shirt. No ties, necklaces, or other dangly things that could get caught in a spinning lathe.
- This class is mandatory for later use of the wood lathe - it is not covered in the basic wood shop orientation.
- This is the pre-requisite for the Advanced Wood Turning classes.
Matt ([email protected]) is a Cloud Engineer and Astronomer by trade, but has been doing woodworking of various kinds for about 35 years.
