This is a beginners level course to teach basic navigation skills and knowledge. It will suit those with little navigation experience who wish to undertake easy on track trips. This trip will include a tramp with a day pack Participants must be fit to travel for approximately six hours across hill country, on a track, with a day pack.On completion, the participant will have an experience of:
• Interpreting a Topo-50 map.
• Matching map features to ground features.
• Basic compass use.
• Orienting a map by features and with a compass.
• Using a compass in conjunction with maps.
• Navigating with and without a compass (grid method) over a selected route.
• Location awareness
• Safely travelling on-track in non-challenging bush terrain
Participants must
• Be over 18 years of age OR over 14 if accompanied by a parent/caregiver
• Have a reasonable standard of fitness and be able to carry a daypack.
Sunday 10th November 2024, 9am–5pm.
The course cost is $60 (non-refundable, unless cancelled by OTNZ). 10 participants maximum.
