7 April, time 7.00Hear from Tristan Wadsworth who is an archaeologist with Underground Overground Archaeology, who has been living and working in Christchurch and surrounds for 10 years. Tristan has been involved in several archaeological investigations in Redcliffs and the surrounding area, including overseeing the excavation of the new Redcliffs School 2018-2020The area is home to some of the earliest archaeological sites within Canterbury, dating to the 14th century, and within a few generations of the first settlers of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Redcliffs Flat was a large permanent village site occupied around 1390-1450 AD, but with evidence for regular occupation in the general area into the 18th century.
This early community used tools sourced from distant parts of the country, and gathered resources from the estuary, sea, and forests of the Port Hills, fishing, gathering shellfish, hunting seals and other sea mammals, and moa and other birds, including several now-extinct species. The area is archaeological rich, and has much remaining to tell us about the early environment and history of Canterbury.
