Keith Lawrence tells the story of events at St Bertoline’s church Barthomley, near Crewe Cheshire, which was possibly the site of a massacre on 23 December 1643. Royalist soldiers trapped a group of innocent villagers in the church and having driven them out of their refuge many were slaughtered in cold blood. This story based mostly on Parliamentary sources, has been challenged, suggesting that perhaps other explanations should be considered. Indeed as early as 1916 the affair at Barthomley was described as not so ‘wanton and cold-blooded an atrocity as the Puritan historians would wish his public to understand’. £6 (Museum members £5, children FREE).
