About this Event
Join local historian Peter Laird for a free talk and official launch of his new book, Barrow: Born of Villages, Built by Industry, on Thursday 4 December 2025 at 7pm (doors 6.45pm). Discover the story of how a diverse group of rural villages and hamlets transformed into a thriving industrial town in a short period of time. Laird will explore who shaped the town’s rapid rise, who made a fortune from buying and selling Barrow Island, which famous person owned Ormsgill at one time, and how the geography of the area intertwined with industry to forge our town's unique identity. The book of 240 pages features maps, plans, and rare photographs, many never seen publicly before. The book (£22.99) will be available to purchase during this event. Also available locallyat Douglas Street Stores on Walney (cash only): The Queen’s at Biggar; The Dock Museum; Sutton’s of Ulverston; Heath’s of Barrow, and on Amazon for distant Barrovians.
