Join us to remove Arundo for a morning at a historic spring now in an urban setting.
About this Event

What we’re doing

We’ll be removing Arundo (giant reed) stalks. Then, because the site is a little more remote, we’ll have to process them into smaller pieces and stack them neatly to dry out on site. This site, Barrel Spring, is currently dry, but we’re hoping that water will return as it has at Rock Ledge Spring once the Arundo is gone. Barrel Spring has a small spring box that we're hoping to see water flow at once again!

Volunteer Agreement

We have a new online Volunteer Agreement. If you haven’t signed since April 2025, please sign now (even if you did one in a previous year).

When to meet

7:30am. We will stop when it gets too hot or people are too tired!

Where to meet

  1. Enter at the Sabino Springs Gate House (9997 E Snyder Road) and tell them you’re here for a service project with Sky Island Alliance and the Sabino Springs HOA.
  2. Continue straight, take a left turn when the road tees.
  3. Continue to the Arizona National Golf Course – park in the WEST/OVERFLOW lot (here). You can also navigate directly to the Arizona National Golf Club, but continue to the West parking lot once you get there.
  4. We’ll meet you at that parking lot with the work truck to load up on tools and walk ~1/2 mile to the spring site.

What to bring

  • Daypack
  • Water (we’ll also bring a container for refills)
  • Snacks
  • Meds/anything you need for the morning
  • Long sleeves, long pants, closed toes shoes (wellies or waterproof shoes recommended for the areas we’re currently working)
  • Sun protection – hat, sunscreen, sunglasses or safety glasses (we also have safety glasses, including ones that fit over regular glasses)
  • Your favorite gardening gloves (we’ll also bring lots)
  • A dust mask for dust/pollen/mold/dirt (we’ll also have plenty)
  • Change of clothes/shoes in case you want to go somewhere else afterward.

Please feel free reach out to Sarah at [email protected] or 520-624-7080x18 with any questions!
