About this Event

With over 5 years of planning the reconstruction of Barmouth Viaduct was completed within a 12week track closure and included travelling 200t of new bridge and temporary works over half a mile along the track, twice!

The demolition of the existing and reconstruction of the new was carried out in a unique manner with complex temporary works and methodology, some of which was untried on Network Rail infrastructure. The scheme required the replacement of over 400t of steel and included over 150t of temporary steelwork.

This presentation will explain how this was successfully trialled and carried out.

Speakers:

Steve Richardson was the Griffiths Contractors Operations Manager and Engineering Manager for the scheme. Steve has 30 years of rail experience specialising in complex bridge reconstructions.

Jim Tod FICE, semi-retired Temporary Works and Constructability expert with more than 45 years’ experience in the construction industry, most of which has dealt with the design, construction and operation of complex temporary works.

Projects include bridge launches, slides, flotation; bridge jacking for pier demolition and bearing replacement; concrete and steel bridge demolition, emergency response schemes for bridges, support to damaged and failing structures; facade retention; major needling and propping; heavy moving and lifting.

At retirement he was the Temporary Works Director and Designated Individual for Tony Gee and Partners LLP and a Director of the Temporary Works Forum.

He has presented to the ICE and IStructE on the background to BS5975, written and contributed to Temporary Works Guidance documents for the TWF and contributed a chapter on Temporary Works to the ICE Bridge Design Manual. Since retiring he has been employed by Contractors to give specialist guidance on Temporary Works, provide in-house training and has contributed to Swansea University’s MSC course in Temporary Works.
