New Orleans’ most famous call to action rings true when The Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra returns with a Mardi-Gras-meets-jazz celebration featuring the 19-piece big band, drummer Herlin Riley, singer Tonya Boyd-Cannon, and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. This program celebrates all that makes a party in the Crescent City remarkable with contemporary second-line music and new arrangements of classic jazz songs.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Shelly Berg is an in-demand music director, bandleader, Steinway piano artist and five-time Grammy-nominated arranger, orchestrator, and producer. He is also the artistic director for The Jazz Cruise, and artistic advisor for the Jazz Roots series at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami. An award-winning educator with over 40 years of leadership in higher education, Shelly is currently Dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
A native of New Orleans, Herlin Riley started on the drums when he was three. He played trumpet through high school, but he went back to drums in college. After graduating he spent three years touring and recording with Ahmad Jamal and has often worked with Wynton Marsalis as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and in Wynton’s small jazz groups. He has also worked with George Beson, Harry Connick, Jr., and Marcus Roberts.
Wycliffe Gordon, a globally acclaimed trombonist, has earned the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Trombonist of the Year” award 15 times and topped Downbeat Critics Poll for “Best Trombone” six times. Known for his signature sound, plunger technique, and unique vocals, Gordon has an extensive recording catalog, including the NPR “All Things Considered” theme. A Yamaha Artist, he tours with his International All Stars and is a sought-after educator.
Mississippi-born, Louisiana-raised singer-songwriter Tonya Boyd-Cannon captivates with a soulful, genre-blending style rooted in passion and healing. Known for powerful performances across jazz, funk, gospel, and more, her career highlights include finalist on NBC’s The Voice and performances at the New Orleans Jazz Fest and Colombia’s Mompox Jazz Fest. A recent Tulane MFA graduate, she’s dedicated to teaching and revitalizing others through her dynamic music.
The Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra is a premier ensemble comprised of Orange County musicians that is dedicated to exploring jazz and popular music through the creation and presentation of unique and entertaining concert programs. Led by Music Director Shelly Berg, the Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra brings a fresh approach to the genre through new compositions, compelling arrangements of jazz classics and collaboration with world-class guest soloists.
