About this Event

Middlesex University, Plane Saver and West London Chambers are delighted to offer you an exclusive in-person economic update by the Bank of England on Tuesday 9th July 2024, 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm at Spring Grove House, West Thames College, London Road, Isleworth, Middlesex TW7 4HS.

Alongside Dr Joe Ganley from the Bank of England, Nick Lyth from Green Angel Syndicate will speak on green innovation investment. Professor Robyn Owen and Dr Amy Burnett from Middlesex University will also reflect on two relevant projects into financing West London’s SME green transitions: SME Nature Positive Finance (funded by UKRI/NERC) and their work supporting the Green Economy Action Plan, part of London Council’s climate change programme.

Surveys of SMEs, such as the British Business Bank Small Business Finance Markets Report (2024), continue to demonstrate that although SMEs are increasingly aware of the need for a 'green transition', they are often unable or unwilling to invest in this change – due increasingly to uncertainties over the economy, policy and regulations. Whilst access to finance is not always the main perceived barrier (not all SMEs are seeking investment), it remains a vital part of the investment decision, given the high cost of borrowing.

There are also many innovative green finance mechanisms, such as community investment bonds and municipal financing schemes that can support more localised, regenerative and resilient economies that can encourage levelling up and inclusive, just green transitions. Our speakers will address financing options and solutions for successful green business transition and explore how the Bank of England and other financiers (including local authorities and communities themselves) can bolster the role of SMEs in an effective and scalable greening of the UK economy.

Speakers:

  • Dr Joe Ganley, the Bank of England’s Deputy Agent for Greater London
  • Nick Lyth, Founder & President of Green Angel Ventures

Professor Robyn Owen and Dr Amy Burnett, Middlesex University GreenFin Research Cluster

Why join?

  • You will have the opportunity to ask questions and give feedback which will help the Bank of England to gauge a sense of the current localised environment and may be used in ongoing decisions.
  • Refreshments will be provided. There will also be an opportunity to network.
