Join us for Maine’s largest authors’ fair and meet 90+ notable local Maine authors, get your books signed, and support the local literary arts with your purchase of personalized books! Enjoy free readings, talks, and panels throughout the day as we "take over" the beautiful Bangor Public Library to celebrate the Literary Arts this winter holiday season.
Authors from all genres will be represented: adult and YA fiction, non-fiction, romance, mystery, adventure, folklore, outdoors, self help, science fiction, fantasy, cryptozoology, children's books, cookbooks, horror, paranormal, history, and many more. With dozens and dozens of titles by Maine authors to discover, there’s something for everyone. There will also be raffle tickets, sponsors’ vendor tables, and special surprises and events at the day of the show.
The Fair will also feature the special launch of "North Woods at Night" a charity anthology to support the the Forest Society of Maine.
Free admission and programming but if you plan to buy books bring cash, Venmo, or PayPal as many authors cannot accept credit cards. Shopping local and supporting the arts locally is Paul Bunyan approved!
This event is organized and hosted by Christopher Packard, the Bangor Authors' Collaborative, Author of Mythical Creatures of Maine in cooperation with the Bangor Public Library.
PROGRAM SCHEDULE
10:30-11:15 - MAINE FOOD WRITING PANEL: Join us for a one-of-a-kind panel discussion which will discuss writing about food and foodways in books, blogs, articles, and social media - a must for food lovers and aspiring food writers and influencers alike! The panel will be led by author Sarah Walker Caron (Bangor). She specializes in writing about quick and easy cooking, sustainable eating and fun cooking for families. She also writes about parenting, motherhood, careers, writing and travel. Her books include: The Disney Princess Tea Party Cookbook, Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts: Official Wizarding World Cookbook, and Easy Frugal Cookbook and many more. ind out more about Sarah at www.sarahcaron.com and read more of her food writing at www.sarahscucinabella.com. Margaret Hathaway and Karl Schatz (Gray) are the husband and wife team behind seven books on food and farming, including the memoir The Year of the Goat, the guide Living With Goats, two volumes of the Portland, Maine Chef’s Table, the Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook and Maine Community Cookbook, Volume 2. Margaret is a writer who has worked in book publishing, corporate communications, and as manager of New York’s Magnolia Bakery. Karl is a photographer who has worked as the online photo editor for Time Magazine, and as director of Aurora Photos. Since 2005, the couple has lived with their daughters on Ten Apple Farm, a homestead in southern Maine, where they raise dairy goats, tend a large garden and small orchard, make cheese, teach workshops, and operate a guest house. They are also the cofounders of a new nonprofit, Community Plate, dedicated to facilitating connection and creating community through shared meals and stories, and preserving Maine’s oral storytelling tradition. Sandy Oliver is a gardener, cook and freelance food writer and food historian. She has authored books of food history, including the prize-winning Saltwater Foodways: New Englanders and Their Food in the 19th Century; Food in Colonial and Federal America, and she co-authored Giving Thanks: Thanksgiving History from Pilgrim to Pumpkin Pie. Her cookbooks Maine Home Cooking, and Down East Delicious compile recipes from her column Taste Buds, published by the Bangor Daily News for 18 years. Semi-retired, she lives on Islesboro and is a regular columnist in the pages of the Working Waterfront published by the Island Institute. 11:30-12:30 - HOW TO PUBLISH A CHILDREN'S BOOK - A Panel Discussion on How to Publishing a Children's Book. with leading authors, illustrators, and publishers. Have you always wanted to publish a children’s book? Or have always wanted to know more about how a book gets published? Then join us to learn some tricks of the trade in this moderated panel discussion that will answer your questions.
Representing the traditionally Published Author perspective will be Alexandra S. D. Hinrichs (Bangor); she is the author of several widely acclaimed and award winning children’s picture books including The Lobster Lady, The Pocket Book, I Am Made of Mountains, & The Traveling Camera. Representing the Illustrator perspective will be Eric Zelz (Bangor); He is the illustrator, designer, educator, and journalist whose work has been recognized with international, national and regional awards from organizations including the Society of Environmental Journalists and the Society of News Design. Representing the self published Author perspective Jeffrey Hope (Bangor) is the author of a children’s chapter book Real Spies Don’t Use Rowboats, the first book in the Boy Spies of Maine. He is also the former news anchor on Bangor’s WABI. Find out more at: https://jeffreyhope.com/
The panel will be moderated by aspiring novelist Geoff Wingard (Orono), Bangor High School History Teacher, Department Head, and the 2022 Maine State History Teacher of the Year. His writing is published in Rivers of Ink, the book fair’s official charity anthology.
12:45-1:30 - KEYNOTE SPEAKER - PAUL DOIRON - Doiron is the best-selling author of the Mike Bowditch series of crime novels set in the Maine woods. His first book, The Poacher’s Son, won the Barry Award and the Strand Critics Award and was nominated for an Edgar for Best First Novel. His second, Trespasser, won the 2012 Maine Literary Award. His novelette “Rabid” was a finalist for the 2019 Edgar in the Best Short Story category. Paul’s twelfth book, Dead by Dawn won the New England Society’s 2022 Book Award for Fiction, as well as his second Maine Literary Award. It was also a finalist for the Barry Award. His books have been translated into 11 languages. 1:30-2:15 - PUBLIC RECEPTION & ANTHOLOGY LAUNCH -
Please join us for this special moment as we celebrate this community event and launch our beautiful “North Woods at Night,” the official charity anthology of this year’s Book Fair published by 12 Willows Press (Winterport). There will be light snacks, short readings, and brief remarks by members of the community. We will also announce the winner of the Bangor Authors' Writing Awards and the Golden Typewriter Award - an annual award for service to the literary community in our region.
2:30-3:15 - STEPHEN KING'S MAINE
Join Maine author Sharon Kitchens as he discusses her new book, Stephen King's Maine: A History & Guide, join her as she identifies the locations that serve as the basis for King’s fictional towns of Castle Rock, Jerusalem’s Lot, Derry, and Haven. Drawing on historical materials and conversations with locals and people who know King, the author sheds light on daily life in places that would become the settings for Carrie, Salem’s Lot, The Dead Zone, Cujo, IT, and 11/22/63.
