Join high government officials from Bangladesh to discuss over 80 business opportunities in the dredging and waterways management sectors.
About this Event

Join high-level government officials from Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BDWD) and private sector leaders to learn of potential business opportunities in Bangladesh. Attendees will be briefed on the over 80 inland waterways projects to address need for dredging and other mitigation measures to keep the over 15,000 miles of rivers in Bangladesh navigable. In turn, attending companies will have the opportunity to brief the delegation on their company’s capabilities to assist Bangladesh with their waterways management needs.

Situated on one of the largest river deltas in the world, Bangladesh depends on a vast network of inland waterways for sustaining its economic growth. Its rivers and floodplains accounts for 80% of the country and serves as vital arteries for the agriculture, fisheries, shipping, and passenger transport. Although the country’s waterway network is almost 15,000 miles long, only about 3,500 miles can be used for vessel traffic due to increased sediment and other climate related issues.

The Government of Bangladesh has undertaken an ambitious initiative to mitigate the impact of flooding and increased sediment build up by expanding procurements of dredger machines and related equipment. BIWTA, BWDB, and the private sector are executing an extensive plan to maintain the navigability of 100 major rivers. BIWTA’s current project, to be completed by June 2023, is expected to cover waterways from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar. Once implemented, the project will allow ferries, launches, and river vessels to remain operational on domestic river routes year-round.

In addition to dredging, Bangladeshi government officials have expressed interest in the following related topics: inland port operations, ferry services and ticketing, waterfront development, financing mechanisms, terminal management, navigation and safety, environmental/pollution management, and jetty design/construction.
