About this Event
If the Grateful Dead is your religion, then the Crazy Horse is your church when Third Thursday rolls around. Every month Jonny Mojo (Achilles Wheel), Gary Campus (Deadbeats) and Tim High (Tim High & the Mighty) host a cast of the finest musicians from around the region to conjure lightning in a bottle. BBD is a gathering point for everyone who wants to plug into the feeling of what it was like soaking in the otherworldly sounds at a Dead show while sharing the dance muse with the tribe. The music that bubbles forth from these nights captures the spontaneous, primal, orgasmic spirit that so many of us crave.
Jonny is a proverbial pied-piper who guides the flock to the promised land with his incredibly versatile guitar playing and passion for the music coursing through his veins. He is one of the brightest lights among Nor Cal GD guitar specialists. He lives and breathes this music like a fish swimming in the sea. Gary emanates pure joy in every beat and gracefully molds his style to elevate the strengths of his collaborators. He’s been a rhythmic instigator in the region for 45 years now and is more fired up than ever. Nothing makes Tim happier than singing Grateful Dead songs as is evident by his assertive and heartfelt renditions of the classics as well as obscurities.
We’ve moved through several months since the passing of Phil Lesh, yet it still feels very fresh. Just a few days after what would’ve been his 85th birthday, we are happy to assemble an all-star cast of guests to celebrate the legend. Not only that, but it’s also Spring Equinox, which feels particularly significant as we transition into the new season. Providing the thunder bolts and lightning on guitar and vocals is Matt Hartle (China Cat, Painted Mandolin). The longtime mayor of the Santa Cruz GD scene has the Midas touch with every group he’s involved with. He led our last Phil tribute back in November which was absolutely dazzling. Matt and Jonny always have a way of pushing each other to brink and beyond.
Another man that needs no introduction is Scott Guberman (Stu Allen & Mars Hotel) on keys and vocals. Scott had the great honor of being a member of Phil & Friends on multiple instances and shared a strong connection with the man himself. We’re also celebrating his birthday so you can be sure we put a couple Brent songs on the setlist to cater to his unique skillset. There are no ordinary moments when Gubes is on stage.
Rounding out the group is the bass Jedi himself, Murph Murphy (Stu Allen & Mars Hotel). His knowledge of every era and every song played by the Grateful Dead is profound. Soft spoken offstage and tastefully verbose on all onstage matters of the low end, there’s no one else we’d rather have channeling the spirit of Phil in his own unique way. Murph has a direct conduit of alien communication just like Phil did in his prime.
