If the Grateful Dead is your religion, then the Crazy Horse is your church when Third Thursday rolls around. Every month Jonny Mojo (Achilles Wheel) and Gary Campus (Deadbeats) host a cast of the finest musicians from around the region to conjure lightning in a bottle. BBD is a gathering point for everyone who wants to plug into the feeling of what it was like going to a Dead show. The music that bubbles forth from these nights captures the spontaneous, primal, orgasmic spirit that so many of us crave.
Jonny is a proverbial pied-piper who guides the flock to the promised land with his incredibly versatile guitar playing and passion for the music coursing through his veins. He is one of the most highly respected guitarists in the Bay Area and all around Nor Cal. He lives and breathes the music of the GD to the nth degree. Gary emanates pure joy in every beat and gracefully molds his style to elevate the strengths of his collaborators. He’s been a rhythmic instigator in the region for 45 years now and is more fired up than ever.
We couldn’t resist doing one more 50th anniversary show before the year is out. BBD’s take on June ’74 was so off the hook, of course they have to follow that up with a deep dive into the Winterland vibe. 10/17/74 is something of a dark horse amid that legendary five-night run which led into the band’s hiatus. As usual, the band is not attempting the impossible task of recreating it. They just want to conjure the spirit of such a monumental moment in history. We also want to celebrate the birthday of one of our favorite Deadheads and artists who was born on that exact day – Julie Dee!
Joining the band on this special occasion will be Todd Gardner (Saints of Circumstance) on guitar, Scott Foreman (No Simple Highway) on keys, Murph Murphy (Stu Allen) on bass, Athena Karlin on vocals and, of course, Tim High on vocals. Most of us have seen firsthand how cosmic the connection is between Todd and Jonny. They never fail to shower us with a lightning storm of psychedelic creativity. If you’ve seen The Grateful Dead Movie, you understand the essence of what was going down on that iconic ice rink in October ’74. So, let’s all plunge into the multi-verse and be conduits for some of the best music ever made!
