First launched in October 2013, The Great Baltimore Oyster Partnership is a collaboration between the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore's Healthy Harbor Initiative and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Join us this fall and volunteer to help deploy oyster cages along the piers of the Downtown Sailing Center and Lighthouse Point. These cages are maintained for nine months, with volunteers scrubbing cages, measuring spat, and testing water quality samples. Once the oysters reach adult size, they will be planted on a protected, non-harvest reef in the Patapsco River where they can continue to provide water quality and habitat benefits.
----------
To participate in the program, new volunteers must attend a workshop to learn how to care for and maintain the juvenile oysters in cages.

With one adult oyster able to filter and clean up to 50 gallons of water per day, oysters are key to the long-term health of the Bay and all the other critters who call it home. But after decades of overharvesting, habitat destruction, poor water quality, and disease, the Bay’s oyster population is a fraction of what it once was. Efforts like oyster gardening are critical to restoring these important animals.
