We’re holding a balsam bash on the Moat Brook. Himalayan Balsam is an invasive plant which lives on the banks of most english rivers and streams. It successfully competes with native plant species for space, light, nutrients and pollinators, and excludes other plant species, thereby reducing native biodiversity. As an annual plant, Himalayan balsam dies back in the winter and, where the plant grows in river systems, can leave river banks bare of vegetation and liable to erosion. Dead plant material can also enter the river, increasing the risk of flooding.
We will be taking to Moat Brook to remove as many of these plants as we can, so the more who turn up ,the better. Removal is very easy and all equipment will be supplied. Those attending will need to wear long trousers and long sleeved tops and bring a drink.
