One-Acts Autumn 2024
Ballycogley Players will be taking the stage in the Wexford Arts Centre on 29th and 30th October with their offerings for Festival time in Wexford this year. They are performing three one act comedies, which are Nearly Departed by Garry Watson, Joining the Club by David Tristram, and Isn’t the Water Lovely Today by John McDwyer.
In Nearly Departed Lily White is in hospital for a simple appendectomy. Unfortunately for her, the next bed is occupied by fellow villager, and hypochondriac, Jean MacDonald. Jean thinks she has a good grasp of medical terminology and proceeds to cause mayhem with her hilarious misunderstandings. She tries to persuade Lily that they have both died and are awaiting judgement…
Joining the Club tells of a successfulcareer woman who becomes unexpectedly expectant. She plans to reveal the result of the home pregnancy test to her husband this evening, but he has startling news of his own.
In Isn’t the Water Lovely Today we eavesdrop on two conversations in a café. A journalist is chatting to the waitress, looking for material for a series of human-interest articles on people in service industries. But we also get to overhear the other patrons of the café. The journalist may get more material than he expected.
This year sees the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Ballycogley Players, when they emerged Phoenix-like from the ashes of three rural groups in the Mayglass, Killinick and Kilmore areas. Since then, they have performed 49 full-length productions, and over seventy-one-acts and other short plays. They have also staged a great number of light sketches to help various fund-raising efforts throughout the Baronies of Forth and Bargy.
The three plays listed here offer the audiences a variety of entertainment in the best traditions of the group, ranging from light amusement to outright hilarity.
