ABOUT
Trailblazer Legendary Mother Leo Saint Laurent invites anyone over 35 who’s interested to learn more about ballroom and voguing. The ballroom scene is a culture founded by Black and Latinx trans women in the 60s/70s in New York. Since this space was founded by and for people affected by discrimination, the physical expression cannot be separated from the activist and social work within/outside the ballroom community.
The workshop will provide a basic understanding of the different performance types and categories in Ballroom, such as: Vogue Fem, New Way, Old Way, Runway and Face.
The workshops begin with a warm-up, consisting of stretching and strengthening exercises as well as elements and concepts that are essential in ballroom, such as posing. The exploration of the different categories is based on fundamental technical exercises and drills as well as conceptual freestyle exercises. For some styles you are welcome to bring high heels, otherwise sneakers are recommended.
BIPOC and queer people are especially welcome to participate, but the workshops are open for everyone. An acceptance of BIPOC and queer people is assumed/condition to participate since this forms the origin of ballroom culture.
