ABOUT THE CONCERT:
Join Sharing A New Song for a very special concert celebrating the theme “Bajo el Mismo Cielo” (Under the Same Sky). With songs from R&B to Vivaldi, and from the shores of West Africa to the high Andes, SANS is spreading the message that we are all connected and yearn to breathe the same air of kindness, compassion and freedom.
A few highlights include the Ghanaian gospel classic “OYE (Asem Pape),” which SANS learned from the London African Gospel Choir last summer, Vivaldi’s iconic “Gloria,” and a rollicking “hot off the presses” Donnell Patterson original, composed just for this concert, “Bajo el Mismo Cielo.”
SANS is thrilled to be singing two folk songs from the Andes, “El Condor Pasa” and “Sariri Paya,” with the celebrated Andean ensemble New Inca Son, a fixture of the Boston world music scene for decades. Members of the band have been teaching SANS these songs, which we’ll perform together at the concert.
Fifty members of the chorus will travel to Peru this summer, to sing and collaborate with choirs in Lima, Urubamba and Cusco.
ABOUT NEW INCA SON:
New Inca Son performs music and dance from the Andes, with musicians originally from Bolivia and Peru. Keith Lockhart, Conductor of the Boston Pops has called them a "proud bearer of an indispensable cultural legacy." They have performed Andean song and dance on world class stages and in classrooms in 15 different U.S. states.
In 2019, New Inca Son headlined at both of the Smithsonian National Museums of the American Indian (both in NYC and Washington DC). In 2015, they performed at the Kennedy Center for the Arts and the Smithsonian FolkLife Festival.

New Inca Son's mission is to preserve their indigenous heritage, and to instill, particularly in children and young people, an understanding and appreciation of Andean music and culture. As recognition for their educational work, the band earned the "Distinguished Arts Educator in Music" award from the Mass Alliance for Arts Education and the "Gold Star Award," from the Mass Cultural Council.
SPECIAL THANKS:
This concert was made possible in part by a grant from the Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture Grant Committee, a local agency, which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
