BAJA BUG is a Norwegian instrumental surf rock band, deeply inspired by the awesome 60's. The sound of BAJA BUG challenges the genre mainstream, while staying faithful to the context of Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Astronauts, Ahab & The Wailers and Link Wray. One can also find references from the contemporary surf rock scene, as well as elements from alternative rock, B-movies and Tarantino.
The genesis of BAJA BUG as a band, came out of the song writer Espen Paulsen's time living in Copenhagen. There, he co-founded several bands in the years up to 2004, and got inspired by the surf rock genre. Upon returning to Norway, he persuaded his childhood friend and guitarist Andreas Moe to switch to bass, and surf rock. BAJA BUG was born, and the silver lining for the stage was set!
The band composed and rehearsed music in a ramshackle studio in the east of Oslo, and quickly entered the concert scene in Norway. Many band members were tried out, before Daniel Horn took his place as the drummer in 2007. BAJA BUG was a trio at that time, 2007.
After a concert at “MIR Grünerlökka Lufthavn” in the fall of 2012, audience member and musician “Burt Rocket” argued his way into BAJA BUG, by highlighting that there was room for both more guitar and an electric organ in the band. “Burt Rocket” turned out to be a well-known character in the surf and garage rock scene in Norway. BAJA BUG is now a quartet. Song writing, jamming, concerts and studio recordings are now the path forwards. By concert audiences, the band is renowned for its strong live performances of positive atmosphere, with lots of energy, enthusiasm and mood building music; "Surf Noir", "progressive surf" and "sound from the 60's" are some relevant terms.
“THE SURF WILL RISE AGAIN” is the band's debut album, and consists of 13 self-composed songs. The songs range from classic, heavy surf rock, to spaghetti western style, true to Ennio Morricone. The band also pulls the listener into an eclectic journey through the mystical Orient, zigzagging the next moment to California's hot palms and beaches.
The musical moods are easily convertible to movie references wherever you turn, where the sand, the sea, fast cars, faster women, hard liquor, illegal equipment and run-down motels are all party to the sound. The final component is the unlikely and likable plot, with headstrong characters making rash decisions without heeding consequences. The song titles are all vivacious indicators; Bishop of Crime, The Good Old Bad & Ugly, Gunfight in Kreml, Moehawk and Pacific Punch.
In 2019 BAJA BUG even got two of their compositions in the movie "Headless Entanglement" by director Per Ingvar Tomren. The movie had a premiere in Oslo, cinema showings in cities both in Europe and Los Angeles USA, the fall of 2019.
