Dubbed “the band we are all obsessed about” (Deb Grant, BBC 6 Music) Baiana (pronounced By-Anna) is the Brazilian-inspired project of sensational artist Laura Doyle. Baiana has been wowing fans across the country with their acclaimed debut album produced by legendary Latin percussionist Snowboy.
Laura was inspired to form Baiana after living in Rio de Janeiro where she became enraptured by Brazilian culture and fell under the spell of the local music scene. Covering a huge range of styles from fiery Sambas, Bossa Nova, Baião and everything in-between, Laura evokes the spirit of the Brazilian greats such as Elza Soares, Gal Costa and Elis Regina and romantic torch singers of the 40s and 50s whilst brining her own unique voice to life through her original work.
This evening will see them present an intimate acoustic interpretation of songs from their debut album along with other treasures from the Brazilian songbook. Featuring guitar virtuoso John Wheatcroft, an acclaimed artists in his own right who has worked with luminaries such as Biréli Lagrène and Stochelo Rosenberg, the trio is completed by Uruguayan bass player Andres Lafone, one of the pioneers of the UK Latin Jazz scene who has performed with Airto Moreira, Snowboy, Da Lata and many more.
Refreshingly joyful and charismatic in all their performances, Baiana’s live show is being heralded by many leading jazz DJs as a “must see” with its heady mix of infectious rhythm, superb musicianship and beautiful song.
A hugely popular draw at the Love Supreme and Ealing Jazz festivals, Baiana supported Brazilian mega-star Gilberto Gil on his UK tour. The band’s previous singles have featured on Channel 4, BBC 5 Live, 6 Music, BBC Wales, Jazz FM’s A-list and many more.
