Join us for a new craft group, a drop in session that is free to attend at the Core in St Ives Community Orchard. Turn waste fabric into fabulous bags or other creative items. Lovely variety of fabrics to use. From 12th of November to 9th of December it will run on Tuesday evenings from 6pm-8pm, anyone over the age of 11 is welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Lovely variety of fabrics to use. People can either pay some money for the bag/items they have made or they could donate some of the bags/items that they make and keep some. An opportunity to share skills or maybe learn new skills.
The Orchard was given a lot of excess fabric, from a local small business- thank you to Kev Milo from Good Folks Barbers. This inspired Pene Reynoldson, an occupational therapist and orchard volunteer to set up a sewing group called ‘The Bag Factory’, which is all about connecting communities, sustainability and having a bit of fun. Oh, and to make bags of course.
As this club is all about saving fabric from going to waste, stopping the need for plastic shopping bags and sharing skills, we were keen to support this project.
This Bag factory is similar to a worldwide initiative called Boomerang Bags,
Ready made designs would make great Christmas presents and range from super simple: organic lavender bags (oh the aroma!), walnut shell pincushions, carry bags, water bottle bags, yoga eye masks, to more fancy Japanese inspired creations. There will be projects that just need some hand sewing/ embellishing, and plenty of opportunity to be creative in choice and design. Or simply pick up a prepared bag bundle and just sew. Alternatively share your own ideas for utilising this fabric and get making.
No prior knowledge of sewing needed. There will be skilled sewers available for guidance. People are more than welcome to pop in and see what it is all about.
There will be a limited number of sewing machines, so if anyone can bring along a working machine along that would be much appreciated.
The CORE has limited on site parking; it will be kept clear for people with limited mobility and for people with sewing machines to drop them off before they park up. Donations of haberdashery (buttons, threads, ribbons etc) would be very welcomed.
Kevranna Foodshare project has offered to fund this sewing group up to Christmas time, thanks to funding from Sedell Collins – Cornwall Community Foundation
