Badieh: Music from the borderlands of Afghanistan & Iran
Badieh are a Spanish-Iranian duo devoted to the traditional folk music of Greater Khorasan - a vast cultural region that spans the modern borderlands of Iran and Afghanistan. Formed in 2019, the group brings together two seasoned performers and researchers of regional music: Mohammad Miraghazadeh, a master of the Iranian tar and setar, and Michel Gasco, a. Spanish musician and ethnomusicologist who plays oud and rubab.
Through their meticulous arrangements and collaborations with master musicians, Badieh offers a rare and immersive window into the rich and often overlooked traditions of Khorasani music. Their recordings evoke the sweeping steppe landscapes of eastern Iran and northern Afghanistan, the refined artistry of ancient Herat, and the enduring musical legacies of cities like Torbat-e-Jam.
Audiences can expect a deeply immersive and transportive experience, as Badieh brings to life the rich and rarely heard folk music traditions of Greater Khorasan - the cultural heartland spanning eastern Iran and northern Afghanistan. With a combination of traditional instruments (Afghan rabab and Persian setar) and centuries-old melodies, the duo creates a sonic journey that is both meditative and emotionally powerful.
What sets this performance apart is Badieh’s rare authenticity and attention to cultural detail. This is not fusion or reinterpretation for the sake of novelty - it’s a respectful, meticulously researched revival of a fading oral tradition, performed with cinematic sensitivity and contemporary resonance. Whether you’re drawn to world music, classical traditions, or atmospheric live performance, Badieh offers a unique window into an ancient musical world - one that feels timeless, vital, and deeply human
--
Zemzemeh (Siyavash Doostkhah & Greta Kelly) explore sufi poetry and mystical music of Iran through acoustic traditions infused with concepts of love and harmony. The duo augments acoustic instruments of tanbur and shah kaman with analogue and digital synthesisers, bass infused beats, looping and multi-effects to give a new interpretation of the ancient poetry.
