Walkmans, broken cables, egg-whisks, double bass, smartphones, effect pedals, copper poles, contact microphones, and more, belong to the collection of various sound making tools of the transatlantic experimental music duo Bad Groupy (EST/DE/DC). We combine free improvisation with programmatic constructs and everyday noises mutating into spherical soundscapes that fill simultaneously the physical performance space and listeners’ headspace with often familiar yet unique sound objects.
Jeff Surak has been a fixture within the experimental community for many years, curating the Sonic Circuits Festival, programming for Rhizome DC, and running his own Zeromoon label. His own work manifests non-linear narratives through lo-fi techniques and archaic technologies.
Kris Kuldkepp (EE) is a sound and performance artist based in Hamburg, Germany. After years dedicated to classical and early music performance on the double bass and viola da gamba, her working methods now include improvisation, deep listening and attention on singular sounds. The main tools she employs are various string basses, early music instruments, and a modular synthesizer in combination with found objects, motors, and other noisemakers to create experiences that deconstruct the meanings and forms of musical structures. Kris has a bachelor's degree in classical music performance and an international masters in Contemporary Performance and Composition. In 2019-2023, she was a research fellow at the Immersive Audio Lab at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. Kris has given several lectures and workshops on interactive technology, spatial sound, and free improvisation in Europe and the USA.
