We all know the tragic Halifax Explosion of 1917, but did you know there was a second Halifax Explosion in 1945?An ammunition depot in Bedford caught fire, setting off a series of massive mushroom-cloud-shaped explosions. Tens of thousands evacuated their homes and spent the night in open fields, watching the blasts from a distance. Not everyone fled though. Hundreds of ordinary Haligonians rushed toward the flames in a desperate effort to help the military and fire departments quell the flames before it reached the main ammunition depot.
On July 16th at 7pm, Andrew MacLean of Backyard History will be making his first ever Nova Scotian appearance to talk about 'The Second Halifax Explosion.'
Andrew MacLean is the author of ‘Backyard History: Forgotten Stories From Atlantic Canada’s Past,’ host of the Backyard History Podcast, and the writer of the Backyard History newspaper column.
