Sumptuous, sensual and impossibly handsome, at first glance the French-Vietnamese director's lavish foodie romance looks like just another decorous prestige period drama. But in its elegantly restrained way, "The Taste of Things", which is set almost entirely in the kitchen, grounds and dining room of the country chateau of famed gourmet Dodin (Benoît Magimel) in 1880s France, is every bit as radical and risk-taking as some of the showier, quirkier awards contenders this year (this film was France’s submission in the International Film category at the recent Oscars).
Cook Eugenie and her boss Dodin have grown fond of one another over 20 years, and their romance gives rise to dishes that impress the world's most illustrious chefs. When Dodin is faced with Eugenie's reluctance to commit, he begins to cook for her.
