“How beautiful are the feet” Messaih HWV, George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
Composed in 1741, with texts from the King James Bible, this beautiful oratorio is one of the most loved and famous pieces of music. This aria has gotten its text from Romans chapter 10 verse 15. “…that preach the gospel of peace and bring glad tidings of good things.”

“Andres Maienlied ‘Hexenlied’” 12 Gesänge Op. 8 no. 8, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
A different kind of May song. Ludwig Heinrich Christoph Hölty (1748-1776) was a German poet who was considered one of the most gifted lyric poets in his time. His work was characterized by love of nature and the expression of national feeling. “Swallows are flying, spring’s triumphant…A fiery dragon flies around the roof and brings us butter and eggs…soon we’ll flit quietly outside. Tally-ho to the splendid dance!”

“Elfenlied” Mörike-Lieder: No. 16, Hugo Wolf (1860-1903)
From a cycle of 53 songs, “Elfenlied” is a humorous song with its premise being a pun on the word Elf. Meaning both elf and eleven, when the town crier calls out the eleventh hour a poor elf gets woken an hour early and thinks it’s time for the elf dance. The little elf crawls out of his snail house and much like a drunken man makes his way to the house. He tries to peek inside, but he slips and bonks his head! “Well elf, have you had enough? Cuckoo! Cuckoo!”

“Bei Männern” Act I, scene 2 in Die Zauberfllöte, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Pamina and Papageno express their love for marriage and the importance of a perfect couple. The importance of love for these two characters cannot be understated. “Nothing is more noble than man and wife”

“Vildt, vildt, vildt, suser blæsten” Dyveke’s Sange: No. 4, Peter Heise (1830-1879)
Dyveke was the mistress to King Christian II in the early 1500. The young woman and her mother were not liked very much by the court, but Christian refused to send them away. Dyveke died mysteriously in 1516, and from that point on, she became an inspiration for many poets and composers. In this song from the cycle, Dyveke can no longer hide her feelings for the king, even though she is cautious of the darkness she detects in him.

“Næppe tør jeg tale” Dyveke’s Sange: No. 5, Peter Heise (1830-1879)
Dyveke no longer feels safe with the king. He does not shy away from bold, and public demonstrations of their relationship. Dyveke is starting to believe him to be very delusional. The dislike for her amongst the court is only getting worse and she feels trapped by the king. His love for her is dangerous and she fears for her life.

“Saper vorreste” Act III, scene 3 Un ballo in maschera, Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)
It is the late 17th centrury in Boston. A vast and rich ballroom is illuminated ready for a wonderful masquerade ball. Oscar is being questioned by Renato about the king’s disguise but Oskar refuses to tell. Instead, he taunts and laughs at him.

“Mary had a little lamb” Act II, scene 3 Brothers, Daníel Bjarnason (1979-present)
The opera is based on Susanne Bier’s film of the same title and story. It is based on the sacrifices of going to war, brotherhood, and love. In the beginning of act II, Sarah is singing a lullaby to her newborn baby. She is hoping her husband will come back from the war as his brother in arms just did. The accompaniment is full of dissonance which parallels well with her grief and the unstable mental state she is in. The aria is dark and haunting, but Sarah still has hope.

“Chocolate” Seven For Luck: No. 2, John Williams (1952-present)
Originally, this cycle was written for soprano and orchestra, but Williams rewrote it for piano and voice shortly after the premiere in 1998. Rita Dove wrote these poems to shed light on the many phases of life a woman goes through. Not much is written on each song individually, but we can all be tempted by a little piece of chocolate.

“Monica’s Waltz” Act II scene 1, The Medium, Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007)
The Medium is a two-act dramatic opera with words and music written by Menotti. The first performance was on May 8th 1946 at Columbia University in New York. Toby is performing a puppet show for Monica, and through the aria it becomes evident that they love each other. Toby is mute, but that doesn’t stop Monica from telling him he has the most beautiful voice in the world.
