The work is a setting of Mary's song of praise from the Gospel of Luke, sung by Mary upon learning she would be the mother of Jesus. George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) wrote Dixit Dominus in 1707 at age 22 during his stay in Italy. The work sets Psalm 110, a text celebrating God's power and victory. Together, these works represent the excellence of two of the Baroque's greatest composers.
