As part of our "Tween/Teen Summer Electives" program at Southwest Portland Martial Arts, we will be hosting safety/first-aid courses with La Toya Hampton of "Safety Side Up CPR" that serve to enrich and empower youth.Different "Sitter Safety" courses are offered (as described below) - some dates feature two different courses that can be registered for separately. Classes, Descriptions and Dates:
Safe@Home by Safe Sitter® is a program designed for students ages 8-11 to prepare them to be safe when they are home alone. The program is designed to prepare students to care for themselves when parents are away for short periods of time. This course teaches students how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. The program is designed to prepare students for their first steps towards independence. Registration fee includes the Safe@Home workbook. Parents are asked to return for the final 15 minutes.

CPR for Babysitters teaches the lifesaving skills of how to act in emergencies that require CPR and relief of choking in infants and children. Skills are taught by using the American Heart Association's Family & Friends CPR course curriculum. This course does not provide a formal certification, but does provide a participant course completion card. Recommended for ages 10 and up. Registration fee includes the student workbook. Min
Safe Sitter® is a nationally-recognized program that gives kids ages 10-16 the skills and knowledge needed to safely care for children infants through school age. In this 2-day workshop, in addition to the importance of treating babysitting as a business, participants will learn choking rescue skills, how to handle life-threatening emergencies, how to keep themselves safe, when and how to call for help, and child development knowledge to help them become a safer and better sitter. The lessons are filled with fun activities and role-playing exercises. Students must attend the entire session and exhibit respectful, mature, responsible, and safe qualities that are desired in a babysitter to receive their completion card. Registration fee includes the Safe Sitter workbook.
Course content includes but is not limited to:
Safety Skills: Indoor safety, outdoor safety, online safety, and personal safety.
Child Care Skills: Child development, child care routines (including diapering practice), and behavior management.
First Aid & Rescue Skills: Injury prevention, injury management, and choking rescue. CPR is an optional component.
Life & Business Skills: Screening jobs, setting fees, and greeting employers.
