Baby Bird Too - Creative Development - Preview Showing

Baby Bird Too is a bold and emotionally charged autobiographical theatre work co-created by 13-year-old Ellie Lagaluga and her mother, Sacha Lagaluga. This intergenerational collaboration places Ellie as the lead artist, performer, playwright, and sound designer, and continues the powerful story first told in 'Baby Bird' as part of 'An Unexpected Tour' in 'Crossroad Arts' 2021 Major Production. Where Ellie appeared as a 9-year-old transgender girl growing up in regional Queensland.

Now, four years later, Ellie’s world has shifted dramatically. This coming-of-age sequel traces the abrupt end of childhood innocence in the wake of rising political hostility and social discrimination toward transgender youth. At the centre of the work is Baby Bird a fully realised young person navigating identity, resilience, and injustice.

Through text-based performance, sound, movement and projected imagery, this work embodies the internal and external pressures placed upon her, while her mother, a supporting character, struggles to hold her child in a world increasingly governed by silence, systems, and patriarchal control.

Baby Bird Too is both protest and poetry, a love letter between mother and daughter and a fierce artistic act of visibility.

*This project is supported by the QLD Government through Arts Queensland as part of the Melt Festival Development Program through the Brisbane Powerhouse Foundation.
