This is a free event.Duration: 45 mins
Meet staff at the Main Entrance to the Gallery at 11am and receive directions to Gallery 4 for an 11.15 am start.
Join Magda Keaney, Head Curator, International Art, Shaune Lakin, Senior Curator, Photography and Anne O’Hehir, Curator, Photography, to discuss the theme of touch in the exhibition Women Photographers 1853–2018.
Touch is our fundamental social experience – babies learn to touch before they learn to speak. Women artists have often embraced touch, challenging the idea of photography as a mechanical practice and asserting their hand in the process. Magda, Shaune and Anne will reflect on the significance of touch to tell personal stories in relation to larger social and political structures.
Emily Casey, Program Convenor, Kids & Families, will provide tactile materials for your babies to enjoy.
Women Photographers 1853–2018 is on display in Galleries 2, 3 and 4 until 1 Mar 2026.
