Join us in person or online for a spirited discussion between Carmen Febo San Miguel and Johnny Irizarry on Taller’s legacy. Together and individually as Executive Directors, they led Taller Puertorriqueño for 32 years of its 47-year history.
They led the organization in addressing the AIDS crisis, criminal justice reform, the collapse of Puerto Rico’s economy, amongst others. They did this while also facilitating various stages of Taller’s expansion. This discussion will also touch on Irizarry’s inspirations for his artwork currently on view in Taller’s Lorenzo Homar Gallery.
Moderated by Luis Hernández.
Long associated with Taller, Luis made contributions through his work as Taller's Cultural Programs Coordinator/Bookstore Manager. Guided by the dictum of his fellow compueblano, poet Victor Hernández Cruz, "Think with your body and dance with your mind," Luis organized book fairs, concerts, and film festivals; edited publications and wrote weekly columns for community newspapers among other activities. He also worked as Cultural Coordinator for the Asociación de Músicos Latinoamericanos (AMLA) and as a Program Officer for the Philadelphia Foundation. Writer, translator and interpreter, Luis was a founding member of the New Song group "Siembracanto" and of the writers' collective "Desde este lado."
