COURSE DESCRIPTION

AWHONN’s advanced fetal heart monitoring course is designed for perinatal clinicians who previously completed the AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course, a comparable fetal monitoring educational program and/or who hold certification or added credentials in fetal heart monitoring. It may be used to support preparation for certification examinations.

This 1-day instructor led advanced fetal heart rate monitoring course expands on the knowledge and physiological principals presented in the AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course. This course uses a case study approach to support the analysis of complicated patient clinical information and tracings. The course emphasizes the physiology of fetal-maternal oxygenation, instrumentation, interpretation of tracings, and the selection of interventions as well as communication and documentation techniques.

The components of this course include:

  • Complex case studies and electronic fetal monitoring tracings
  • Strategies for collegial communication
  • Advanced principles of maternal-fetal physiology
  • An optional online post-test

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe physiologic principles of maternal and fetal oxygen transfer as they apply to principles of fetal heart monitoring.
  • Recognize fetal cardiac arrhythmia patterns and describe potential outcomes associated with these patterns.
  • Analyze complex case studies and tracings utilizing standardized terminology.
  • Apply potential risk management principles, communication techniques and documentation strategies to complex and challenging patient care scenarios
