An Explorations into Freedom Intensive Retreat

Krishnamurti’s urgent message that each of us must enter the work of transforming our human consciousness, seems even more prescient and necessary now as we confront a world in crisis, the rise in conflict, the continuing fragmentation of society, the polarization of beliefs and the destruction of our natural world. The work of this Retreat directly encourages us to meet this challenge of creating a new mind.
This 8-day in-person Intensive Retreat, Awakening to the Unburdened Mind, takes us on a fascinating journey into the core, life-changing teachings of Krishnamurti. Together we will discover the power of ‘listening and seeing’, which Krishnamurti made clear has the potential for a radical shift of perception. The innate intelligence of ‘listening and seeing’ can expand our capacity to navigate dimensions of awareness where thought, which is always limited, cannot reach.
As our capacity to ‘listen’ awakens, we are creating the ground for the penetrating power of ‘insight’ to flower. Like a bolt of lightning lighting up the mind, the wholistic flash of insight can illuminate the dark unexamined corners of the mind to bring new levels of clarity.
This is a rare opportunity for anyone who has been exposed to Krishnamurti’s teachings through his books or videos, to take the next important step into a deeper understanding of what he is pointing to, a profound realization of awakening to the unburdened mind, living beyond conflict and fear.
Krishnamurti reminds us that psychological distortions in our thinking are the source of our suffering, confusion and conflicts. If we wish to end our suffering, we must be willing to creatively examine the nature and limitations bred into our inherited human consciousness.
Through this deep dive of shared exploration together, we can have a glimpse into the freedom that is possible by living in the fully alive timeless present.
Krishnamurti’s genius turns our attention inward to examine the very content and operation of our present thought-based, me-centered consciousness. He implores us to see for ourselves when psychological distortions begin to arise, what feeds and maintains them, and hinders our ability to have clarity in our day-to-day perception.
We almost never consider that our human consciousness is highly conditioned, programmed, put together from fragments of thought and memory, that it reflects untested beliefs, including borrowed random opinions and distorted images. As we go deeper into our explorations, we can begin to ‘see’ how we unconsciously accept this problematic inner narration as the exclusive authority of perception.
Our explorative work together can help us clear away dead beliefs and ideas, help us to discover the unburdened mind that is fresh, clear, fully alive, bristling with creative energy; a mind capable of feeling aliveness, the subtle waves of love that is the very essence and energy of being alive.
If you have ever wondered what participating in an in-person, week-long, fully immersive exploration into the heart of Krishnamurti’s teachings can mean for you, this Intensive Retreat can provide that important leap to a deeper understanding of what is preventing us from awakening to a new dimension of freedom and love.
Please join Richard and Deborah together with a small group of like-minded people to discover for yourself where this inspired journey of exploration and inquiry can take us.
Our work together takes place on the beautiful grounds of the Krishnamurti Center, where Krishnamurti lived and wrote, surrounded and protected by the sacred mountains and energy of the spiritually alive Ojai valley, creating the perfect ground for deep insight and friendship to flower.
Facilitators Richard Waxberg and Deborah Kerner live in Ojai, California. They moved to Ojai in 2004 by invitation to create and begin facilitating the Explorations into Freedom Intensive Retreats for the Krishnamurti Foundation of America. They offer two 8-day retreats each year at the Krishnamurti Center in Ojai, in June and October. They have also facilitated retreats in Canada and Denmark.
They are both practicing artists. Richard plays the Japanese Shakuhachi flute. Deborah is a published poet. Both Richard and Deborah had successful careers in New York City as designers. Richard taught art and design, aesthetics and art history at the prestigious Parsons School of Design.
They left their lives in New York City taking up the challenge Krishnamurti proposed of stepping out of the limited and conflictual ‘me-centered’ consciousness. Their journey took them to Ojai, California to continue their studies of Krishnamurti’s teachings, and to India where they taught several art and design courses at the Rishi Valley School in rural Andra Pradesh, a school based on Krishnamurti’s teachings located near his birthplace.
During their year of teaching at the Rishi Valley School, Richard and Deborah also traveled to 4 Krishnamurti schools throughout India, to participate in dialogues with teachers and staff on what it means for students to experience an education based on Krishnamurti’s teachings.
As part of their earlier spiritual work, they studied Native American shamanic practices for 12 years with 3 traditional Native American elders before discovering the profound life-changing teachings of J.Krishnamurti. It was during these studies that they learned the importance of gathering, storing and releasing energy as an essential part of spiritually transformational work.
They continue exploring current studies and observations on human consciousness that reflect Krishnamurti’s profound message of transformation, freedom, and love.
