Thanks to their great prosperity in the first half of the 17th century, Venice and Rome could boast an impressive group of renowned composers, including Monteverdi, Grandi, Legrenzi, Cozzolani and Cavalli.
In the court and cathedral chapels, monumental sacred works were prepared for performance in the many magnificent churches, the most prestigious of which was St. Mark's Basilica.
This period of great musical renewal saw the transition from the old style to a more concert style, in which the first contours of opera became visible.
This is reflected in the virtuoso solo passages that make this music so expressive and compelling.
