About this Event
Join Deborah for a seasonal Autumn qigong pop up. What is Qigong (pronounced chee-gung)?
Qigong means cultivating life energy; qi - life energy, gong - to cultivate with time and effort. It is a blend of active and dynamic movements, breathing, visualisation and meditation techniques aimed at cultivating healthy qi flow through the body. It has its roots in Daoism and Buddhism and is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Our time together will include an introduction to the season,
warmups, seasonal qigong forms (movements) and meditation.
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), each of the five seasons has an associated element and an organ and meridian network that is the focus of the practice. Just as the seasons change, our lives also change. Attuning our bodies with the seasons and cultivating our own energy can help us to flow through these changes with more ease.
Autumn is the season of the metal element and the time of the year for gathering and consolidating energy. Nature is slowing down after a productive summer in preparation for winters long sleep and our bodies have the tendency to do the same. Just as the leaves begin to turn colour as natures energy slows, our bodies begin to wind down in preparation for the long months ahead.
The energy of this season supports our letting go of the waste, the old and stale in our lives, leaving us receptive to making room for what is important to u; it’s a time to consider what we value. Autumn returns us to our essence, moves us to eliminate what we no longer need, reveals
again what is most precious in our lives.
“Letting go is a natural part of the seasonal cycle and elemental phases. Without the leaves falling, there would be no nourishment for winter and growth in spring.”
What are the benefits to practicing Qigong?
Active movements in qigong help to loosen joints, strengthen tendons and muscles, improve circulation, and relax the nervous system. These, along with the breathing and intentions of qigong practices work to create greater balance and harmony, and an overall sense of health, vitality and
wellbeing.
By practicing postures, movement and meridian stretches, we can influence our vital energy or emotional state. We hold emotional stress within our bodies; yoga, qigong and meditation help to release tensions enabling you to feel lighter, and calmer, to a place of stillness and quiet.
Deborahs class is inspired by her training with Seasonal Yoga and Mimi Kuo-Deemer.
