THE AMBASSADOR: Dr. Alessandri, a professor at the University of Miami since 1996, has been working with individuals with autism and their families since 1981. He holds a degree from the University of Rochester and earned his MS and Ph.D. in Psychology from Rutgers University. At UM, he serves as the Assistant Chairman for Community Outreach and Engagement in the Department of Psychology.
He has received numerous awards for his community service, including the Autism Society of America’s Wendy F. Miller Autism Professional of the Year Award, the March of Dimes Community Excellence in Health Care Award, and the Health Services Coalition Outstanding Community Leader Award. Additionally, he was named one of the Ronald McDonald House's 12 Good Men and the Dewar's 12 Man of Distinction.
In 2012, he was honored as the David Lawrence Champion for Children by the Children's Trust, and in 2016, he was named Visionary Leader of the Year by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. In recognition of his career achievements, the University of Rochester School of Arts and Sciences named him Distinguished Alumnus of 2022.
THE MEDICAL DIRECTOR: Carlos Gadia, MD, received his medical degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in 1980. He completed his residency in Pediatric Neurology at the University of Miami School of Medicine and a fellowship in Childhood Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he also served as an instructor at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Neurology.
Dr. Gadia is a former Associate Director of the Dan Marino Center at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, a leading center for autism and neurodevelopmental disorders for over 20 years. Currently, he practices as a pediatric neurologist in Weston, FL, and co-founded the nonprofit Eyecontact – Lives Shaped by Autism. He is a board member of the ICO PROJECT and co-founder of several organizations including TEABRAÇO, RIO TEAMA, BAHIA de Todos os TEA, and TCHÊADORO. Dr. Gadia is the Medical Director of TITA Therapy and serves as the ambassador and curator of TEARTEIRO – Autismo e Arte.
