The purpose

The Autism Friendly Schools Research Project is a nationwide study exploring the school experiences of autistic pupils in Ireland. It aims to capture the missing voices of autistic pupils to inform educational policy and practice, addressing ongoing challenges around the full inclusion of all autistic pupils in the Irish education system.

The project is exploring inclusion in education from the perspective of primary and secondary school students and their families. We have concluded our research interviews with primary-school participants and are seeking to include post primary-school students in the next phase of interviews.

The purpose of the coffee morning is - to learn more about the project and to find out how you can get involved in this project, if interested. We are seeking input from autistic students across all levels of need, in secondary education (schools/home schools etc) in Ireland.

Who are the organisers?

The research team includes - Dr Sinead McNally (Principal Investigator), Dr Lisa Keenan & Ciarán Ramsbottom from the Institute of Education, DCU and Prof Mary Rose Sweeney (Co-Principal Investigator), from the Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, RCSI.

Who should attend?

This is an inclusive event so anyone with an interest in the project is welcome to attend – either on your own or with your child.

How do I sign up?

You can sign up to attend by registering for a ticket on this Eventbrite page. While tickets are free, we do have a maximum capacity of 30 attendees. Once we have reached this number of registrations, we will have a waitlist in operation. For this reason, we ask that you please let us know if you can no longer attend so that we can provide a space to someone on the waitlist.

Why a coffee morning?

We are hosting this coffee mornings to discuss the project in a welcoming, relaxed setting. At the heart of this national study is a fully consultative process working with autistic pupils and their parents about their school experiences and what “Inclusive Education” means for them. We are always open to feedback and would love to hear your thoughts on the day. We would also like to provide children and adults the opportunity to connect with others.

What to expect:

When you first arrive, we will welcome you and introduce ourselves. There will be Tea and Coffee available.

We will give a brief explanation of the project and answer any questions that arise for you. This is an informal and relaxed setting, so children (and adults!) are free to move around and play throughout.

How do I get there?

The event is taking place in the College Hall in the Royal College of Surgeons, 123 St Stephen’s Green. We will be at the York Street Entrance to provide directions to the room on the day.

Accessibility

The building is wheelchair accessible. Signposts will be placed outside and inside of the building to help people find the event room. We also have a quiet room available, which is just across the corridor from the main event room.
