Please join a Fond du Lac elder, Janis A. Fairbanks, for an author talk on her newly published title, Sugar Bush Babies: Stories of My Ojibwe Grandmother, by the University of Minnesota Press. In Sugar Bush Babies, Janis revisits her childhood during Indian Relocation, moving between Ojibwe villages and white communities shaped by Hollywood myths. Through her grandma’s teachings and vivid memories - boarding school tales, powwows, Girl Scout camp, and selling lilacs - Fairbanks shares a lyrical memoir of love, tradition, and the enduring power of women’s wisdom. Throughout it all, the spirit of Cecelia Robinson shines through. Janis has many interests and works as an accountant, columnist, novelist, consultant, and grant-writer. She is also active in Ojibwe language preservation and history research.
