About this Event

About War on COVID:

In February of 2020, a respiratory virus started infecting people in some parts of the United States. This novel virus, known as Covid-19, swept the nation, however many of the infected patients suffered only mild respiratory symptoms. Some patients instead suffered severe symptoms that required treatment in an Intensive Care Unit, and many patients started dying.

Across the world, nations began restricting movement of people, and new rules were enacted including travel bans and quarantines. It appeared that some nations were completely over-run with severe cases, however, in some parts of the Midwest, there were so few cases that many people believed the entire thing was a complete fabrication at worst, or “just another form of the flu,” at best.

In other parts of the nation, the infection rate skyrocketed, overwhelming existing hospital resources and emergency requests for services were made that pulled healthcare workers from all over the nation to help in a time of need.

In March, soldiers from the Midwest were mobilized to help with the crisis. They hoped to become heroes. They hoped to make a difference, but they had no idea how the short deployment would affect them as individuals or as professionals.

This is the story of a few of those who helped in the relief effort. Some were reluctant, some were hopeful, but none were left unscathed or unscarred by what they saw.

Captain David Kyrie is an RN who has worked in the healthcare since 2004 in various areas of care. He has been an officer in the Army Reserve Nurse Corp since 2017, and he was deployed to New York City at the height of the Covid pandemic as well as one subsequent deployment as part of a Field Hospital.

He is the most happily-married man in history and lives with his wife, three children, and 2 cats in a small town outside of Indianapolis in a Victorian era house. He enjoys over-thinking every aspect of his life. When he has free time, he is either writing, making repairs or improvements to his Victorian house, reading for enjoyment, or watching nerdy movies with his wife and children.

He is now a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), and he enjoys helping other humans to find answers to the problems they face in their lives.

He intends to publish fictional books in the future.
