For 57 years, Alfred told his family he had been a barber, chauffeur, and translator in World War II. But following the death of his wife, Alfred quietly started sharing a glimpse into his actual experiences.
His daughter first began capturing those fractions of stories on napkins during her weekly nursing home visits, which grew into a nearly two-decade deep dive into his true role in the war---a reluctant front -line machine gunner in 5 campaigns in Europe from 1944-1945.
After five years of research, Louise thought she had arrived at a complete understanding of her father’s history. When he was awarded the French Legion of Honor, it prompted yet another unexpected discovery.
The book Alfred is about the events of World War II, but it is about every war. Alfred was one soldier, but he is every front-liner. A veteran of Iraq wrote, “The understanding of a combat veteran’s experience through the lens of your father’s service is completely accurate.” Another soldier said this book “makes it possible for millions of veterans’ families to understand at least something of what their loved ones endured and the brotherhood they shared through it all.”
Alfred: The Quiet History of a World War II Infantryman is the story of a devoted father, a gentle man and farmer, and a secret he kept until the final years of his life.
Alfred was raised in Martinsville, Wisconsin, and farmed in the Lodi/Dane area.
About the author:
Raised with seven siblings on a farm of adventures in Lodi, Wisconsin, Louise Endres Moore taught psychology and mathematics in the Waukesha and Wauwatosa school districts and at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
Her interest in psychology sustained her through the many years of researching her father’s path in WWII and his reluctance to speak of it. Alfred: The Quiet History of a World War II Infantryman is an award-winning Biography of the Army, recognized as a #1 Amazon Best Seller, as well as a Book Excellence Awards Winner in Biography and a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Award and IAN Book of the Year Award.
Louise lives with her husband in Cedarburg. Their two grown daughters both live in Kansas City.
